The military intelligence service photographed the flyers in a civilian coat, shirt and tie. These photographs were carried by the flyers on missions so that if they were shot down, they could use them to make false ID's for escape purposes. The one on the right is of Sgt. Harold L. Dillon, an engineer gunner in the 351st Bomb Group who was shot down and became a prisoner of war in Stalag Luft IV. However, the same coat, shirt and tie were used for all the flyers in the bomb group. The Germans interrogating the prisoners at Dulag Luft could determine their Bomb Group merely by looking at the photo.
Part of the processing at Dulag Luft consisted of making an ID record of the prisoner. The following one was made of Sergeant Dillon. This record followed the prisoner to the the permanent camp that he was assigned to.
